Thousands Expected to March and Rally in Portland for March 20th
Global Mobilization Against War and Occupation.

Local peace and justice organizations expect thousands of people to turn out for a rally and march titled "The World Still Says No To War" at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 20th, 2004. Over 110 faith, social justice, peace, environmental, and other progressive organizations and small businesses have endorsed or cosponsored the rally as of March 12th. The event will begin at Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square at SW Yamhill and 6th. It is being organized as part of a "Global Day of Action Against War and Occupation" on the one year anniversary of the most recent massive U.S. attack on Iraq.

Subthemes to be addressed at stops along the march include "Defend Civil Liberties--Repeal the USA Patriot Act," "End US Support of Israel's Occupation of the West Bank and Gaza," and "Fund Jobs, Education and Health Care, Not War."

The event will begin with a brief rally in Pioneer Courthouse Square featuring speeches by a military family, a veteran, and keynote speaker Ramon Ramirez, president of PCUN, the Oregon farmworkers' union. There will also be music throughout the event, and a dynamic wrap-up once the march returns to Pioneer Square.

Participants will be coming in from all over Oregon and SW Washington including Pendleton, McMinnville, Rockaway, OR and Goldendale, WA.

Organizations interested in becoming involved may contact Peace and Justice Works (PJW) at (503) 236-3065. PJW's Iraq Affinity Group (IAG) is also planning a separate vigil the previous evening (Friday, March 19) from 4-6 PM at Terry Schrunk Plaza to mark the exact one-year date of the bombing. The theme will be "Counting the Costs."

At least five other communities are planning events on March 20 in Oregon: Eugene, Medford, Corvallis, Roseburg and Florence, and the United for Peace and Justice website http://www.unitedforpeace.org says that over 200 events are planned in the US with 50 other countries also planning to demonstrate against US foreign policy.
