PEACE RALLY: "The Invasion of Afghanistan, Five Years Later:
End the Occupation, Work for Peace"
Expanded Friday rally, Pioneer Courthouse Square, SW Yamhill and Morrison.
Friday, October 6, 2006, 5 PM

People working for peace in the Portland area will hold a rally on Friday, October 6 at 5 PM in Pioneer Courthouse Square (corner of SW Yamhill and Morrison) for a rally marking five years since the US invasion of Afghanistan. The massive bombardment of the already devastated and impoverished nation occurred just weeks after 9/11. on October 7, 2001; a month later the Portland Peaceful Response Coalition began its weekly Friday rallies for peace and justice which continue to this day.

The October 6 rally is being cosponsored by the Peace and Justice Works Iraq Affinity Group and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.

"There is a myth floating around even in circles of self-proclaimed progressive thinkers that 'nobody opposed' the US attack on Afghanistan," said Dan Handelman of the Iraq Affinity Group. "Not only did Representative Barbara Lee of California bravely vote against authorizing the use of force, but thousands of Portlanders joined tens of thousands around the world who marched both before the invasion and in response to it."

The rally will include speakers, including a WILPF member who will tie the national week opposing weapons in space (October 1-8) to the war on Afghanistan. Following the program will be a short march, with the event expected to end by 6:15 PM.
